RENNIE
HARRIS' FACING MEKKA
May 13 - 18, 2003. The
Joyce Theater.175 Eighth Avenue
at 19th St. 212-691-9740. Travel with Rennie Harris to the
roots of hip-hop in Facing Mekka, a landscape of movement,
rhythm, sound and image. This multi-layered work features
a cast of 17 dancers, live percussion, a recorded score of
vocal compositions and collage projections. For Harris, "Dance"
equals "Mekka" -- because in marrying movement and
music of different cultures, we can capture the common ground
amongst people and cultures and the positive energy and spiritual
force that is "dance".
